Dixon Dam was built in the 1930’s as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project. Only hard labor and horse-drawn equipment were used in the construction.

As with all government projects the dam failed in 1976 and the lake went dry.

Currently the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks manages the 120 acre lake area.
