Remember Chinese maker and Redditor SexyCyborg? About a year ago, she skyrocketed to internet fame after showing off some remarkable 3D printing projects that highlighted her figure. She’s back for more now, with a set of very inventive 3D printed wearable drone racing accessories. Consisting of a 3D printed wrist mount for two Nano Drones and a controller belt buckle, it is a fantastic way of transporting your drones while still looking very cool.
This set of wearable drone accessories follows some other inspiring 3D printing projects by SexyCyborg. About a year ago, the Chinese maker showed off her designing skills by 3D printing the quite sexy underlit skirt that doubtlessly attracted a lot of attention on the dance floor. Back in August, this was followed by a set of 3D printed high heels that housed a secret compartment for a hacking kit that could theoretically be used to break into office buildings. Not advised to actually use and probably not very comfortable, but very cool.
Things have since been quiet around SexyCyborg, but we could’ve expected that she was working on another 3D printed wearable. And as she explains, she found inspiration in the lively FPV drone racing scene of Shenzhen. “Due to the low cost almost anyone can afford to get involved, build and fly their own drone. It’s sort of a modern version of drag racing but for geeks. While I’m not quite ready to race, I do like to go and cheer on the local competitors,” she says.
“I don’t want people thinking I’m only a spectator but I also don’t want to drag a large drone around with me,” she says. This is why she built this cool wrist mount for the popular Cheerson CX-10D mini drone, which she can easily start up to show off her own piloting skills and convince doubters.
Of course you can’t carry around a full sized 3D printed drone on your wrist all the time, but this mount does actually provide room for two of these popular mini drones. “I have two since the battery life is short and the battery can’t be swapped. If I get one with a swappable battery one is ok,” she adds. While the CX-10x drones have not received fantastic reviews, the maker revealed that she likes the CX-10D for its easy flying modes and altitude control. “Auto mode is not really good to use since it gives you bad FPV habit, but it’s great for giving to other women so they can learn to fly quick,” she says.
As SexyCyborg explains, she designed all parts in Tinkercad software, which is her go-to solution. “I tried others and always go back to that,” she says. To ensure a perfect fit, she started her designs with a 3D scan of her own wrist. The 3D printable files can all be found on Thingiverse. The drones themselves are kept in place with little magnets, with the mount ensuring that the drones (and especially the fragile propellers) are not damaged during use. The regular controller easily fits on a 3D printed belt buckle. As she revealed, it fits perfectly and comfortably.
The result is a fantastic drone mount that looks like it came straight out of some anime with automatic drone battles. While these mini-drones won’t perform very well in FPV drone races, the concept is fantastic. While a personal protection drone swarm would be even more amazing, SexyCyborg already revealed that there’s no good or cheap way to have such portable drones fly automatically. But we can always dream.
