SALINA, Kansa s- Kansas State Polytechnic unveiled an outdoor netted facility for training and research for unmanned aerial systems on Wednesday.
The facility was built with a partnership with Westar Energy who provided and installed the poles for the facility. Westar Energy will also use the facility to train and expand their use of drones.
“This will be a big benefit in the future after a big storm event to send these UAS systems out and inspect the lines and report back and we can get the power back on much quicker,” said Bruce Akin the Vice President of Power Delivery at Westar Energy.
Students at K-State Polytechnic are excited to use the facility. Student Tim Bruner said, “It’s good for everyone, it’s good for the students because we get exposure to the industry early on and can help us build connections to establish careers.”
The facility will be open to other businesses in the future to train and research unmanned aerial systems.
